Wilson Triad Golf Ball Review: One Of The Best Golf Balls

Wilson Sporting Goods, a company with a rich history in golf equipment, introduced the Wilson Triad golf ball to cater to players seeking improved performance and feel. This innovative ball design aims to provide golfers with a unique combination of distance, control, and soft feel.

The Wilson Triad is a three piece golf ball that is considered just on the high end of the value category aimed at a wide range of players, from mid to low handicappers. It's particularly well-suited for golfers who desire a balance of distance and control, without sacrificing feel around the greens.

We tested the Wilson Triad on the golf course to see how it compares to other golf balls in this category and the results were pretty impressive

Design and Technology

The Wilson Triad golf ball features a three-piece construction, which is the foundation of its performance characteristics. The ball's design incorporates several key technologies:

  • T3 Core Technology: The core of the Triad ball is engineered to produce high initial ball speeds, contributing to increased distance off the tee.
  • High MOI Design:  Results in moving weight from the core to the outer layers of the golf ball resulting in faster ball speed and lower driver spin for a more stable ball flight and more fairways hit.
  • Tri-Balanced Construction: This proprietary technology ensures that the center of gravity is perfectly centered within the ball. This negates any defects from manufacturing tolerances, making Triad effectively perform like a one-piece ball for pinpoint accuracy and putts that roll true. The uniform density through all 3 layers result in a ball that is perfectly balanced and will roll true every time.
  • Urethane Cover: The soft urethane cover provides excellent feel and control, particularly for short game shots around the green.  The ultra-thin cast urethane cover supposedly engages longer with the clubface on mid-to-low irons, with the result of generating controlled ball flight and greater spin to attack pins with confidence.
  • 362 Dimple Pattern: The carefully designed dimple pattern helps optimize aerodynamics, resulting in a stable and penetrating ball flight.
  • Colors:  Wilson Triad golf balls are available in  classic white or yellow colors. They also offer the balls with a patriotic american flag.

Wilson Staff Triad Features And Benefits

High MOI Design

A high MOI means lots of forgiveness is built into the golf ball. When you play with a golf ball like this, you are going to notice low spin off the tee and moderate spin on the iron shots.

Many golf ball manufacturers make the core of the golf ball the heaviest part. However, to help increase ball speed and improve forgiveness, Wilson moved the weight out towards the cover on the new Triad design.

The results is some high ball speed.

Tri-Balanced Construction

If you are wondering where the Wilson Triad got its name, it’s from the Tri-Balanced Design. This is a three piece golf ball, but that doesn’t make it anything special.

The real change in technology is the moving of the weight to the outer areas of the golf ball to help it feel more like a one piece golf ball.

One piece golf balls don’t offer us the technology that we need, but the feel of a single piece golf ball is something that helps to lower the chances of inconsistency from manufacturers. Essentially this is a stable golf ball.

Thin Cast Urethane Cover

A thin case urethane cover finishes off the construction of the Wilson Triad golf ball. With thinner covers, we see higher speeds and more responsiveness around the greens.

This golf ball will not spin like the premium Pro V1x or even the Piper Gold golf ball. However, with the thin case urethane cover, we did notice responsiveness around the greens.

In addition, even though the cover is thin, it still holds up quite well to golfers with fast swing speeds. Don’t be concerned if you really go after the ball; you should have no problem keeping this ball in play for several rounds.

Alignment Configuration

Each ball has an alignment line with the arrows on either side to help golfers point the ball towards the intended target particularly when putting.

Performance Characteristics of Wilson Triad Golf Ball

Now that you have some more insight into what the Wilson Triad Golf Ball has to offer, here are a few things to know about the performance of the golf ball. Most golfers working on trying to break 80 will find that distance is not the only important feature they need in a golf ball.

Distance

The Triad ball is designed to deliver impressive distance, particularly off the tee. The combination of the T3 core and aerodynamic dimple pattern contributes to long carries and overall distance gains.

From a distance perspective we found the Wilson Triad was long. It has low spin from the tee box so getting that extra roll is not an issue.

In addition, the entire shifting around of the weight and the core of the golf ball resulted in increased ball speed. Essentially if you want to hit the ball a long way, the Wilson Triad will check the box.

The only thing to be aware of here is that the compression, although not explicitly advertised by Wilson, is likely in the 80-90 range. It’s best to have a bit of club head speed to put this ball into play.

Spin

The spin rates coming off the tee are low, which is a good thing for a player in the mid to low handicap range.

However, the spin rates for approach shots and around the green are slightly lower than we would like. We found the ball to have about average spin.

If you are good at stopping a golf ball on a green and get a bit of extra zip when you hit your wedge and approach shots, then you should have no problem. For those that can’t get any spin, choose a more premium ball, like the Callaway Supersoft, with a slightly softer overall feel.

Feel

Wilson Staff calls the Triad a soft golf ball.  The soft urethane cover provides a pleasing feel at impact, especially on shorter shots where touch and feedback are crucial.

We can say that when playing with it, we actually felt like it was a bit firm. The golf ball itself does not have an overly soft feel,

In fact, some golf balls, like the Vice Pro Soft, have such a soft and buttery feel that it can be a little hard at times to gauge the response the ball will have off the clubface.

Feel is nothing to get overly excited about in the Wilson Staff Triad, but it’s also not a downside to this golf ball.

Durability / Longevity

The thin cast urethane cover had us a little nervous that wewould run into trouble with the golf ball cutting. However, after using it for several rounds, we was impressed with the overall longevity of the ball and the fact that it doesn’t cut after a bad shot.

While prioritizing performance and feel, the Triad does offer good durability, maintaining its performance characteristics over multiple rounds. Overall, three piece golf balls like this are typically quite durable, sometimes more so than the four or five piece golf balls, so keep that in mind.

###

The Wilson Triad competes in a crowded market of premium golf balls. Its performance characteristics place it in competition with well-known models like the TaylorMade TP5, and Callaway Chrome Soft. While brand loyalty plays a significant role in this segment, the Triad offers a compelling alternative for players willing to try something new

The Wilson Staff Triad golf ball is well worth the price as it is a good distance golf ball that still incorporates feel and performance into its design. We were impressed with the new design features of bringing the weight to the outer core of the ball.

The Wilson Triad golf ball represents a significant step forward in Wilson's golf ball lineup. By combining innovative technologies with a focus on all-around performance, Wilson has created a ball that can compete with the best in the market. For golfers seeking a premium ball that offers distance, control, and soft feel, the Wilson Triad is certainly worth consideration

If you have been playing the cheaper Wilson golf balls but are ready to take your game to the next level, the Wilson Staff Triad is the perfect stepping stone. It’s more affordable than the Staff Model R but still has some great features to offer the mid to low handicappers.
