For a long time, Wilson Staff made golf balls that were mostly for the higher handicap golfers. They got really good at creating solutions for players that need help with distance and are concerned with the price of the ball.
However, in recent years with the release of the Staff Model R and now the new Wilson Staff Triad, there is some more interest from golfers that consider themselves mid to low handicappers.
We tested the Wilson Triad on the golf course to see how it compares to other golf balls in this category. The results were pretty impressive, better than we thought.
Wilson Staff Triad Features And Benefits
The Wilson Triad is a three piece golf ball that is considered just on the high end of the value category. It is described as being a golf ball that is perfect for the player looking to break 100 consistently.
Interestingly enough, when we tested this golf ball, consistency was one of the things that stood out the most.

High MOI Design
A high MOI means lots of forgiveness is built into the golf ball. When you play with a golf ball like this, you are going to notice low spin off the tee and moderate spin on the iron shots.
Many golf ball manufacturers make the core of the golf ball the heaviest part. However, to help increase ball speed and improve forgiveness, Wilson moved the weight out towards the cover on the new Triad design.
The results is some high ball speed.
Tri-Balanced Construction
If you are wondering where the Wilson Triad got its name, it’s from the Tri-Balanced Design. This is a three piece golf ball, but that doesn’t make it anything special.
The real change in technology is the moving of the weight to the outer areas of the golf ball to help it feel more like a one piece golf ball.
One piece golf balls don’t offer us the technology that we need, but the feel of a single piece golf ball is something that helps to lower the chances of inconsistency from manufacturers. Essentially this is a stable golf ball.
Thin Cast Urethane Cover
A thin case urethane cover finishes off the construction of the Wilson Triad golf ball. With thinner covers, we see higher speeds and more responsiveness around the greens.
This golf ball will not spin like the premium Pro V1x or even the Piper Gold golf ball. However, with the thin case urethane cover, we did notice responsiveness around the greens.
In addition, even though the cover is thin, it still holds up quite well to golfers with fast swing speeds. Don’t be concerned if you really go after the ball; you should have no problem keeping this ball in play for several rounds.
Performance of Wilson Triad Golf Ball
Now that you have some more insight into what the Wilson Triad Golf Ball has to offer, here are a few things to know about the performance of the golf ball. Most golfers working on trying to break 80 will find that distance is not the only important feature they need in a golf ball.
Distance
From a distance perspective, the Wilson Triad was long. It has low spin from the tee box so getting that extra roll is not an issue.
In addition, the entire shifting around of the weight and the core of the golf ball resulted in increased ball speed. Essentially if you want to hit the ball a long way, the Wilson Triad will check the box.
The only thing to be aware of here is that the compression, although not explicitly advertised by Wilson, is likely in the 80-90 range. It’s best to have a bit of club head speed to put this ball into play.
Spin
The spin rates coming off the tee are low, which is a good thing for a player in the mid to low handicap range.
However, the spin rates for approach shots and around the green are slightly lower than we would like. We found the ball to have about average spin.
If you are good at stopping a golf ball on a green and get a bit of extra zip when you hit your wedge and approach shots, then you should have no problem. For those that can’t get any spin, choose a more premium ball, like the Callaway Supersoft, with a slightly softer overall feel.
Feel
Wilson Staff calls the Triad a soft golf ball.
I can say that when playing with it, I actually felt like it was a bit firm. The golf ball itself does not have an overly soft feel, but that didn’t bother me.
In fact, some golf balls, like the Vice Pro Soft, have such a soft and buttery feel that it can be a little hard at times to gauge the response the ball will have off the clubface.
Feel is nothing to get overly excited about in the Wilson Staff Triad, but it’s also not a downside to this golf ball.
Longevity
The thin cast urethane cover had me a little nervous that I would run into trouble with the golf ball cutting. However, after using it for several rounds, I was impressed with the overall longevity of the ball and the fact that it doesn’t cut after a bad shot.
Overall three piece golf balls like this are typically quite durable, sometimes more so than the four or five piece golf balls, so keep that in mind.
